Easter markets

Date: 1 – 23 / April
Location: Wenceslas and Old town square
What is going on?

Easter markets – celebration of spring arrival and Christian Easter period – take place at many Prague squares throughout the city. The most visited are located just in the centre at astonishing sights as Wenceslas and Old town square. The squares are filled up with colourful stalls where various handcrafted Easter goods, traditional food and unpredictable drinks are in offer. Folk groups from all around Europe have their performances at the stages, craftsmen show off their craftsmanship and visitors are warmly welcomed to participate. It is unforgettable opportunity to experience some of the craziest customs as dousing and whipping the girls and women to chase the illness and make them look younger. The origins of traditional Easter are both Christian and pagan. To the Easter symbols belong painted eggs, whips made of osier twig, cold water and colourful ribbons. In the early morning of Easter Monday boys and men walk through the village and enter houses to whip and douse the girls and women. At the end are the “whipers” and “dousers” endowed with painted eggs and colourful ribbons to arrange their whips. The Easter visit usually ends with inviting men for a drinks or shots.

Prague Spring

What is going on?
The Prague Spring International Music Festival belongs to “must be seen” events for everybody, not even those who are interested in outstanding symphony orchestras and chamber music ensembles of the world. Concerts take place at amazing concert halls as Municipal House or Czech Philharmonic Orchestra Hall, in churches and cathedrals and variety of performers and styles gives everybody chance to pick something to enjoy.

Prague International Marathon

Date: 1 / April, 16.14 / May
Location: centre of Prague
What is going on?
Among racers and viewers is Prague International Marathon celebrated for its trace which is one of the most beautiful in the world. There are plenty of marathon kinds to keep everybody in play. You can choose due to your age, state of health or just ride your in –line skates and have fun. There is an in –line marathon for you. Running in crowd of 3,000 people throughout such locations as Charles Bridge or Lesser town is something more than both ordinary sightseeing and racing.

Khamoro

Date: at the end of the May

What is going on?
In last years became World Roma festival vast showcase of Roma culture from around the world. Not only music, but also seminars, exhibitions, readings, film screenings and displays of craftsmanship are the essence of wild time you can spend here. Both gypsy jazz and traditional gypsy music either from Balkan or Brazil, flaming singers and dancers are real experience of this minority underrated culture.

One world film festival

Date: 1st – 9th of March
Location: Cinemas Lucerna, Svetozor, Evald, Mat and Ponrepo
What is going on?
This International documentary film festival on human rights is held under auspices of former Czech president Vaclav Havel and during its eight year history has reached much fame and recognition. During nine days of the festival 110 films will be screened concerning the most up to date themes as Muslims in Europe, one entire section will be dedicated to the films on Africa, another one captures difficult situation of women in post – Soviet space.
